From August 24th to 26th, 2018, Associate Professor Jod Mehta, a corneal specialist from Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), will work at FV Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department. This is a unique opportunity for patients with corneal problems such as corneal ulcers, corneal dystrophy, keratoconus or corneal scarring to directly undergo examination and treatment by a leading international specialist in Vietnam without the high costs associated with seeking care abroad.
At present, resources to replace damaged corneas are very limited in Vietnam, so FV sources its corneas from prestigious eye banks in the US and Singapore – the world’s most advanced facilities for medically evaluating and preserving donated corneas for corneal transplant surgery. In addition, instead of the traditional full thickness corneal transplant technique, FV Hospital applies partial thickness corneal transplants, when only the damaged cornea is replaced, rather than the entire cornea. Preserving the patient’s original cornea helps to lower the risk of rejection and complications, resulting in better surgical outcomes and vision.
Assoc. Prof. Jod Mehta is recognised worldwide for his expertise in complicated corneal transplant techniques, including: penetrating keratoplasty; anterior lamellar keratoplasty; endothelial keratoplasty; combining penetrating keratoplasty and cataract surgery; combining endothelial keratoplasty and cataract surgery.

Assoc. Prof. Jod Mehta graduated from St Thomas’s Medical School, University of London, UK, in 1995. He is currently Head of Corneal and External Eye Disease Service as well as a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the UK, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Singapore-Malaysian Ophthalmology Society and the Asian Corneal Society. He has won 24 awards in the UK and around the world for his clinical and research work. At SNEC, his work is mainly concerned with corneal transplantation, anterior segment reconstruction and refractive surgery.
