With 40 years of clinical experience in Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain Assessment and Control, Dr Brasseur is now leading FV Hospital’s Pain Clinic and working alongside his peers, Dr Ly Quoc Thinh and Dr Pham Thi Thuy Nga, to help patients manage their pain.
Dr Brasseur offers effective, safe measures to manage persistent and chronic pain in various areas, such as the lower back, chest and neck, shoulder, knee, hip, elbow and wrist. He also works to relieve pain due to other mechanisms, such as: post-stroke central neuropathic pain; peripheral neuropathic pain related to sciatica; Other nerve-related pain; pain linked to specific diseases such as diabetes (diabetic neuropathy); pain related to cancer, either due to the disease itself or treatment.
Dr Louis Brasseur earned his Medical Doctor degree from Paris-Sud University in 1979. He then pursued a Specialisation Degree in Anaesthesiology and Reanimation from the University of Paris Descartes (Paris V) in 1981 and a Specialisation Degree in Pain Evaluation and Management from Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI) in 1998.
Sharing his experiences, Dr Brasseur tells a story about an elderly patient who was suffering from lung cancer and severe back pain. Oral pain medication was not effective for her, and had undesirable side effects. Dr Brasseur devised a special belt that would protect her back and included a pump connected to a catheter which injected tiny amounts of opioids – similar to a local anaesthetic – directly into the patient’s cerebrospinal fluid. This method was technically complicated but highly effective and helped the elderly patient to avoid the side effects of oral pain medication.
