TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN IS NOT AS HARD AS YOU THINK

Nguyen Thi Dieu Huyen, whose father was a nurse, cherished her dream of attending medical school at a very young age. However, she was so afraid of blood that “Just hearing about blood will cause me to faint”. After a long time of consideration, she decided to become a paediatrician as she thought it would be more fun to work with children. No sooner had she become a doctor, she realized that it was truly fun, but it also had strict requirements, such as medical knowledge, especially judgment ability, acumen, meticulousness and patience to perform the best childcare.

At the beginning, like other new doctors, Dr Dieu Huyen was afraid of taking care of children, especially newborn babies. A lack of understanding of children’s needs and their accurate health conditions made Dr Dieu Huyen unconfident. Despite this, with her special love for children and a passion to further her knowledge, she quickly adapted to developing her diagnostic and treatment skills. “By mastering your expertise, you will be confident in every situation. Taking care of children is not as difficult as you think. There is nothing to be afraid of!” That is the encouragement of Dr Dieu Huyen for young doctors when they first enter the Department of Paediatrics & Neonatology.

Up to now, Dr Nguyen Thi Dieu Huyen has hah almost 30 years’ experience working with children. Recently, during an examination for a baby at FV Hospital, a patient’s family member was happy to realize that Dr Dieu Huyen was the one who took care of her whole family for three generations: her mother, her daughter and now her grandchild.

A DEDICATED LEADER – A GOOD LISTENER

By understanding that “No one is completely perfect. The most important thing is to help them maximize their inherent strengths, not to limit and control their weaknesses”, Dr Dieu Huyen has inspired people around her, especially the paediatrician team to be confident with their strengths. Everyone is eager to participate in their favourite major, create more initiatives and contribute to the development of the department. Thus, patients of the Paediatrics Department always receive the most thoughtful and effective treatment. Parents have thanked doctors of the Paediatrics & Neonatology Department for their care: “My child is very shy and afraid of seeing doctors and nurses. However, I can’t figure out how doctors and nurses of FV changed my son’s mindset, helping him recover better. Only after did I find out that the staff came up with many ideas, such as  stories of “catching pests and diseases inside the body” to help them take medicine, or creating bubbles with medical gloves to help playful babies sit quietly for injections.”

In addition to her empathy, Dr Nguyen Thi Dieu Huyen always shows her respect for other associates as well as her subordinates. The humility of Dr Dieu Huyen makes colleagues of different departments feel comfortable when working with her. Dr Tran Trieu Phuong Dong – Paediatrics & Neonatology Department shares: “Dr Dieu Huyen is a good leader. Not only can she solve all issues of the faculty, but she also cooperates with other colleagues effectively and always creates a comfortable atmosphere for the staff.”

Among patients, Dr Dieu Huyen is known as a dedicated doctor and a good listener. She always upholds safety and quality in patient care through improving the expertise of members, preventing risks and continuously advancing in the process of examination and treatment.
