FV Hospital’s Laboratory & Blood Bank Department has officially launched the Interactive Online Laboratory Tests Handbook – a digital platform featuring the complete catalogue of laboratory techniques and service procedures. This initiative marks a significant step in improving information access for doctors, patients, and the wider community, while ensuring transparency in laboratory processes in line with international standards.

A Digital Bridge Connecting Doctors, Patients and Laboratory Services

The Interactive Online Laboratory Tests Handbook was developed to overcome the limitations of storing laboratory information primarily on paper, which made access and updates challenging. Now, the full catalogue of techniques, procedures, pre-test preparation guidelines, payment codes, and related lists has been digitalised, enabling patients to easily learn about and prepare for tests in advance. At the same time, it provides doctors with a practical tool for consultation and more effective monitoring of patients’ treatment information.

Multiple search options for Laboratory Test Catalogue

According to Mr Friend Maviza, Head of the Laboratory & Blood Bank at FV Hospital, the primary goal of this project is to enhance access to and efficiency in delivering laboratory test information for all users – from in-house medical teams to the wider medical community, external specimen referral units, and patients.

For doctors and healthcare staff, the handbook allows detailed searches for each test and provides direct links to Computerised Physician Order Entries (CPOEs), enabling faster, more accurate ordering. The integration of payment codes also streamlines quoting, reducing administrative time.

More proactive scheduling for doctors and medical secretaries

For patients, the handbook offers clear sample collection preparation guidelines, helping reduce the risk of delays or repeat collection. Test descriptions and clinical interpretations are written in simple language and include information about result turnaround times, enabling both patients and doctors to plan consultations and treatments more proactively.

The online handbook reflects all international standards and certifications applied by the Laboratory & Blood Bank, including:

• ISO 15189:2012 – International standard for medical laboratory competence
• Westgard Sigma VP – Highest-level quality control assurance
• External quality certifications from RIQAS (UK), RCPAQAP (Australia), CSQL and QCCUMP (Vietnam)
• JCI Accreditation – Globally recognised certification for patient safety

Publishing this information enhances transparency, reinforces public trust in FV’s professional competence, and affirms the hospital’s commitment to maintaining safe, accurate laboratory processes. “This is only the first step in our journey to digitalise laboratory information and provide greater convenience to patients. We already have plans for further modernisation,” Mr Friend emphasised.

The Laboratory & Blood Bank is collaborating with FV’s ICT Department to develop a Patient Portal that will indirectly link to the handbook, enabling patients to view their test results in real time. In the future, the handbook will also feature educational content, charts, illustrations of laboratory processes, and result interpretation guidelines in line with international standards.
