At the end of 2024, Mr Nguyen Truong Vinh Binh, Optometrist at Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department, was awarded the top prize in the Scientific Poster Report category at the Asian Ophthalmology Refraction Conference (Asia Optometric Congress – AOC), held in Bangkok, Thailand. Shortly after, the same report earned second prize at the 2024 National Ophthalmology Symposium, further highlighting the expertise and reputation of FV Hospital in the field of eye care.
Mr Vinh Binh’s report focuses on the early detection and treatment of cases of pyramidal cornea combined with amblyopia – a significant challenge in contemporary ophthalmic care. The study explored the use of special contact lenses and vision therapy exercises at the same time to improve vision for patients.

The report highlights a typical case involving a 5-year-old paediatric patient diagnosed with amblyopia in the left eye, whose condition showed no improvement despite previous treatment at other facilities. Upon arrival at FV, the patient underwent a comprehensive visual assessment. The examination confirmed amblyopia, as previously diagnosed, but also revealed a high risk of cicatricial corneal disease (a preclinical condition). For this situation, if the child is not diagnosed early and treated carefully, then in the future it is highly likely that the pyramidal corneal disease will progress rapidly, leading to impaired vision and possibly blindness.
For this special case, the team at the Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department selected a parallel treatment plan for both conditions. Mr Vinh Binh explained: “On the one hand, I will curb the progression of corneal disease, and at the same time apply visual exercises to improve amblyopia for this paediatric patient.” To address treatment of cornea with amblyopia in adults, doctors may recommend corneal transplantation. “For paediatric patients diagnosed at the subclinical treatment of cornea with amblyopia – that is, when the condition has not yet advanced – we choose to use specially designed contact lenses that specifically target this condition,” Mr Binh added.
After stabilising the use of contact lenses to control the progression of treatment of corneal disease with amblyopia, the patient was simultaneously prescribed a course of vision rehabilitation exercises. After just one month, visual acuity had improved by 50% compared to baseline and exceeded 80% following three months of treatment at FV Hospital.
The Asia Optometric Congress (AOC) is a major regional event that brings together leading experts from across the region. The recognition of a report by the Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department at this prestigious congress is a testament to FV Hospital’s strong commitment to investing in both human resources and technology – aimed at advancing research and clinical practice in the treatment of eye diseases.
Building on its success, the same report received high praise from the national panel of experts at the 2024 National Optometric Conference. This further highlighted the importance of comprehensive diagnosis and treatment in detecting and reducing the impacts of vision disorders in children.

FV Hospital takes pride in being one of the pioneering institutions in applying advanced science and technology in the field of ophthalmology. In addition to its core strength – such as corneal transplantation and the use of cutting-edge techniques in the treatment of eye diseases and refractive surgery – the specialised unit also places strong emphasis on myopia screening and control, as well as the treatment of amblyopia in children.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by a team of highly experienced specialists, the Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department has provided numerous effective treatment solutions, enhancing quality of life and protecting the vision of thousands of patients.
