Vietnam’s social healthcare insurance now covers endovascular intervention procedures at FV Hospital, providing financial support of up to VND 100 million – over 50% of the total procedure cost.
Endovascular intervention is an advanced technique widely adopted in developed countries such as the United States, Japan, and across Europe. It offers a safe, highly effective alternative to surgery for various conditions, significantly reducing hospital stays. At FV Hospital, this technique is currently used to treat conditions such as uterine fibroids, prostate and liver tumours, as well as cerebral vascular malformations.
TACE Procedure Successfully Treats Liver Tumour in 89-Year-Old Patient
During a routine check-up at FV Hospital in September 2024, Mr T.N.T., an 89-year-old resident of Ho Chi Minh City, was incidentally diagnosed with a 3 cm malignant liver tumour. Given his advanced age and pre-existing chronic kidney disease, surgical intervention carried significant risks. Instead, FV’s medical team recommended treatment using Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) – a minimally invasive endovascular procedure commonly used for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who are not suitable candidates for surgery.

Dr Huynh Huu Danh, Specialist Level I, from the Interventional Radiology Unit at FV Hospital, led the team performing the TACE procedure for Mr T. Through a small puncture in the patient’s right femoral artery, a catheter was inserted into the arterial system, and contrast dye was administered to create a vascular map using the Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) system. Guided by real-time imaging, the interventional radiologist navigated a catheter and microcatheter to the artery feeding the liver tumour, then injected a combination of chemotherapy drugs and embolic agents to block the tumour’s blood supply.
The TACE procedure requires only local anaesthesia, eliminating the need for general anaesthesia and enabling a faster recovery. One month after the intervention, MRI results revealed that over 90% of the liver tumour had been successfully destroyed.
Mr T underwent two additional TACE sessions to further control the tumour and minimise the risk of recurrence. At his follow-up appointment in late February 2025, doctors confirmed that his condition was stable and the tumour was fully controlled.
Mr T and his family were very satisfied with the treatment outcome. Notably, the cost of the two subsequent procedures was reduced by more than 50%, as FV Hospital had by then extended Vietnam’s social healthcare insurance coverage to include Interventional Neurovascular and Endovascular procedures. Each TACE session received approximately VND 50 million in insurance support.

According to Dr Huynh Huu Danh, Neurointerventional Radiology procedures are advanced, minimally invasive treatment techniques that offer outstanding advantages, including excellent safety, fewer complications, minimal pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays. At FV Hospital, these procedures are performed in a dedicated Cathlab equipped with a modern DSA imaging system.
In addition to its advanced equipment, FV Hospital is supported by a team of highly experienced specialists in Neurointerventional Radiology procedures, ensuring high standards of treatment quality. Dr Huynh Huu Danh, a specialist in the Interventional Radiology Unit, is among the few vascular interventional doctors in Vietnam qualified to perform endovascular procedures for both adults and children. With a strong clinical background, Dr Danh is highly skilled in complex interventional techniques such as embolisation of ruptured cerebral arteriovenous malformations, sclerotherapy of venous malformations, tumour embolisation in cancer patients, and acute mechanical thrombectomy – all with a high success rate.

Since 2021, FV Hospital has expanded the scope of services eligible for Social Healthcare Insurance coverage to include high-tech treatments in key specialties such as Cardiology, Orthopaedics & Trauma, Oncology, and Ophthalmology. Most recently, HI coverage has been officially extended to include Neurointerventional and Endovascular procedures, with financial support ranging from VND 50 million to VND 100 million per case.
Patients undergoing Neurointerventional Radiology procedures at FV have expressed great satisfaction with the positive treatment outcomes and the significantly reduced costs made possible through Social Healthcare Insurance coverage. In addition, FV’s financial support policy of up to 20% for patients without private health insurance further eases the financial burden for those in need of treatment.
