The Shining Star of September 2024 award goes to Ms Ho Thi Huong Huyen from the Medical East Ward, a dedicated nurse who has been part of FV Hospital for over seven years. Ms Huyen’s gentle nature and commitment foster an atmosphere of empathy, which is truly ‘a gift’ to the nursing staff, especially those working with oncology patients.
Ms Huyen joined FV in March 2018, primarily in the Internal Medicine Department, specialising in oncology patient care. She shared that, initially, she found the psychological challenges of caring for patients, especially those with recurrent cancer or those who could not fully recover, difficult to manage. However, with experience and the support of her seasoned colleagues, she gradually overcame the stress and found meaning and trust in this difficult profession.
Ms Huyen added, “Although I know cancer treatment is a lengthy journey, every time I see a patient return, I feel very sad. The feeling that I haven’t done my job well enough motivates me to help them receive the best possible care.” Unlike the usual expectation of hospital patients – to receive treatment and then return home – oncology patients often need to “become accustomed” to regular visits for ongoing treatment. This can place emotional pressure on the staff, requiring not only professional expertise but also a considerable amount of patience.
After many years of working with oncology patients, Ms Huyen believes that, beyond providing medical care, being a supportive friend – helping patients navigate emotional crises and sharing their feelings with families – is a vital part of her role. This is especially important for terminal patients; some accept their situation and live fully in the time they have left, while others remain in denial until the end. “Nevertheless, most patients find peace in their final days, though those left behind are deeply saddened,” Ms Huyen shared, explaining why she always gives special attention to the families of cancer patients.
As Ms Huyen mentions, “the job often involves more psychological pressure than physical demands”, yet there are still many sources of joy amidst the challenges. There is the joy of seeing patients who have overcome cancer and are now thriving, the joy of working in a friendly and professional environment that fosters her sense of belonging to the hospital; and the reassurance of clear working processes and regular training activities that prioritise patient safety and safeguard staff. All these aspects help Ms Huyen recognise the value of her work and feel secure as she continues on her career path.
Congratulations once again to Ms Ho Thi Huong Huyen for receiving the Shining Star of September 2024 Award, recognising her dedication, responsibility, and compassionate care for patients. We hope she continues to find fulfilment in her work and enjoys a rewarding career at FV Hospital.
