Enhancing Patient Safety through the Digitalisation of Hospital Quality Management

On 20 September 2025, FV Hospital representatives presented at the Scientific and Technical Conference in Ho Chi Minh City, themed “Modern Technology, JCI Quality”. The conference brought together more than 300 Vietnamese and international healthcare experts to share updates on the latest medical technologies and promote the adoption of international healthcare standards in Vietnam, particularly Joint Commission International (JCI) standards.

At the conference, Ms Mha-An Elejerio Sastrillo, FV Hospital’s Quality and Performance Improvement Manager, outlined FV’s digital transformation journey in quality management. This included the implementation of the hospital-wide e-QMS and the adoption of Lean Management systems, Electronic Medical Records (EMR), JCI Tracer with AMP, and other initiatives to ensure continuous compliance with updated JCI standards. As a result, FV has consistently achieved impressive accreditation outcomes, with compliance exceeding 98% in the most recent survey.

FV maintains its international standards by placing quality and patient safety at the centre of all operations, complying with both Ministry of Health requirements and JCI standards, and fostering collaboration among clinical, paraclinical, and administrative departments to improve treatment outcomes and operational efficiency. FV’s digital transformation in quality management is based on three pillars: (1) e-QMS to digitalise quality processes; (2) Lean Management to convert operational data into actionable improvements and reduce waste; (3) Document and EMR Management to strengthen clinical safety and support accreditation compliance.

Speaking at the event, Ms Sastrillo noted that digital transformation enables real-time quality monitoring and control, turning data into action and helping clinical teams make safer, more accurate and timely decisions. “Most importantly, we sustain a strong safety culture, ensuring that every improvement centres on the patient and is measured by clinical outcomes,” she added.

A key factor behind FV’s strong JCI survey performance is its ability to adapt quickly to change. JCI updates its standards every three years, requiring hospitals to maintain compliance while rapidly integrating new requirements. Drawing on experience from its fourth reaccreditation cycle, FV adopted a proactive, self-directed approach, preparing and conducting internal assessments without third-party mock surveys. The hospital also adapted to both on-site and virtual survey formats, using technology and advanced tracing tools to streamline processes, speed up data analysis and support continuous improvement.

Ms Mha-An Elejerio Sastrillo emphasised, “The most important thing at FV Hospital is maintaining a culture of safety”

Despite increasingly rigorous and comprehensive JCI evaluation processes, FV continues to meet more than 1,200 standards spanning all aspects of hospital operations, including medication safety, surgery, infection control, facilities management, medical records and staff competency management. Surveyors commended FV’s safety culture and indicated they would promote FV’s management model to other healthcare institutions internationally.

Guided by the “Patients First” philosophy, FV is committed to standardising governance, digitalising processes and sharing expertise with the wider medical community to continuously improve quality of care. The hospital also seeks to collaborate with other JCI-accredited institutions to exchange best practices, enhance patient experience and support the broader development of Vietnam’s healthcare system.
