Dr Vo Thi Phuong Thao of the Hy Vong Cancer Centre at FV Hospital has successfully completed the prestigious ESMO Fellowship at The Christie in the United Kingdom, one of Europe’s leading cancer centres. Awarded by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the fellowship recognises Dr Phuong Thao’s strong research credentials and forward-thinking approach to modern medicine, while marking an important step forward for the development of oncology in Vietnam.
Beyond the advanced knowledge and hands-on experience gained through the programme, Dr Phuong Thao’s training opens up new opportunities to introduce cutting-edge cancer care models at FV Hospital, including the development of a Molecular Tumour Board to support personalised treatment strategies and strengthen clinical research.
Towards a Molecular Tumour Board and Clinical Research Unit
One of Dr Phuong Thao’s key objectives through the ESMO Fellowship is to advance the development of a Molecular Tumour Board model at FV Hospital. This approach, now widely adopted by leading cancer centres worldwide, aims to personalise cancer treatment by tailoring therapeutic strategies to the tumour’s molecular and biological profile.

During her fellowship in Europe, Dr Phuong Thao was actively involved in in-depth research into the application of molecular biology in personalised cancer treatment. She gained hands-on exposure to advanced genomic analysis techniques and molecular data-driven multidisciplinary case discussions—powerful tools for characterising tumours and identifying the most appropriate treatment strategy for each individual patient.
At present, FV Hospital’s Hy Vong Cancer Centre routinely operates a Multidisciplinary Tumour Board, bringing together specialists in medical oncology, pathology, imaging, general surgery, nutrition and palliative care. Developing a Molecular Tumour Board will help FV meet international standards and provide more personalised, effective cancer care.

In addition, the knowledge and experience gained within the structured research environment at The Christie in the United Kingdom will provide a strong foundation for FV Hospital to further expand its clinical research activities. This will improve access to new treatment options and, in turn, offer renewed hope to patients with cancer.
