Doctor’s experience – How much is enough?

Working in the medical profession for more than 20 years, Dr Nguyen Tu Duy, the new Head of FV Hospital’s Internal Medicine Department, shared: “Experience is never enough. Medicine develops every day and doctors will full behind if they don’t update themselves with new knowledge and techniques”. To become an excellent doctor, every doctor should be aware of the importance of self-learning, never stop researching, and serve patients to gain more and more experience for themselves.

IN MEDICINE, NEVER STOP DISCOVERING AND LEARNING

Humans have always being curious about their surroundings, especially children. When Dr Nguyen Tu Duy was a child, he always questioned how doctors were able to treat patients. It was that question which became ingrained into his subconscious and over time motivated him to find the answer.

When he grew up, following his siblings, Tu Duy passed the entrance exam to study in the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City with a dream of understanding what is happening in our body and helping others. During his time studying and practicing, young Dr Nguyen Tu Duy always adored the stethoscope. He excitedly realized that doctors, by simply listening to patients’ breathe, can diagnose exact respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, such as mitral valve stenosis, mitral incompetence, and asthma, thanks to, as he puts it, “this miraculous device”. Seeing the power of understanding how medical treatment can diagnose and help patients made Dr Nguyen Tu Day love the profession more and more. Since then, the stethoscope has become his indispensable tool.

When working at the hospital, Dr Nguyen Tu Duy cares about patients with all his heart and mind. For less important matters and meetings, he usually sets them at the end of the day to focus on his examination hours first. If there are any unexpected cases, he will always give priority to patients.
